Six free starting points, with different scopes
These services answer different questions and use different identifiers. Some require a registration number or action by the vehicle’s registered holder. None should be presented as a free global accident-and-mileage database.
1. NHTSA VIN decoder
Decode manufacturer-submitted vehicle specifications for vehicles within NHTSA’s reporting scope. It is not an accident, ownership or maintenance report. Open the official service.
2. NICB VINCheck
Look for relevant unrecovered theft and salvage records supplied by participating insurers in the United States. A negative result does not establish a complete theft or loss history. Open the official service.
3. NHTSA safety recalls
Check eligible US vehicles for unrepaired safety recalls. This is a recall-specific result with coverage limits, not evidence that every manufacturer campaign or repair has been completed. Open the official service.
4. UK MOT history
Use the registration number to review available MOT results, recorded mileage and advisory information. It is not a VIN-only lookup and does not cover every period or vehicle type. Open the official service.
5. UK DVLA vehicle information
Review available vehicle and registration information using the required details. This is different from a finance, accident or full ownership report. Open the official service.
6. France HistoVec
The registered holder can obtain and share a report for a French-registered vehicle. Ask the seller for the genuine shared report; a buyer cannot assume unrestricted VIN-only access to all data. Open the official service.
What to do when the free checks leave gaps
Ask for original service invoices and inspection documents. Investigate earlier registration countries, and decide whether a paid history report adds relevant evidence. Compare report providers by coverage and terms. The official Australian PPSR search is useful but paid, so it is not counted among these free services.
