How to use a historical shortlist
Model names span multiple engines, generations, transmissions and markets. A 2020-era recommendation cannot establish the condition or value of an example on sale today. Start by identifying the exact variant, service requirements and intended use.
Volkswagen Golf
Compare the precise generation, engine and transmission. Review the relevant service schedule and invoices, and check that advertised equipment matches the car. A familiar badge does not replace a VIN and condition check.
Ford Focus
Identify the specific engine and gearbox rather than treating every Focus as one product. Ask for invoices for scheduled work, inspect the car from cold and investigate any unresolved manufacturer campaigns for the VIN.
Audi A4
Factor in the cost of maintaining the actual engine, transmission and optional equipment. Compare the service chronology with the manufacturer’s schedule and ask a specialist to assess expensive or uncertain faults.
BMW 3 Series
Check the model generation and fitted drivetrain, including the evidence for maintenance and repairs. Compare decoded factory details with the current configuration, particularly where modifications or retrofits are advertised.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Confirm the exact variant and relevant scheduled maintenance. Inspect the operation of fitted systems and ask for evidence supporting the service history. A cosmetic refresh cannot establish the condition of the underlying vehicle.
Make the decision on the individual car
Compare like-for-like asking prices, inspect the vehicle and assess total ownership costs. Use the buying checklist to document unanswered questions before purchase.
