Details to have ready
- UK registration number
- VIN
- V5C registration certificate details where required
Read the MOT history
The GOV.UK MOT service lets you review test results, recorded mileage, failures and advisories using the registration number. Compare the chronology with servicing invoices. Repeated advisories deserve attention even when the latest test is a pass.
Compare the DVLA vehicle details
Use the DVLA vehicle-information service to check that the described car matches the registration record. Compare the VIN and document details with the vehicle itself. A registration lookup alone does not validate the seller’s ownership or clear outstanding finance.
Investigate what official tests do not show
Ask for invoices and earlier foreign records for an import. Consider a separate provenance check that explicitly includes the information you need, such as recorded finance or write-off data. Confirm coverage and examine the car independently before buying.
Limits to keep in mind
- MOT records describe tests and observations, not every collision or repair.
- Availability varies with vehicle age and jurisdiction; missing tests do not prove low mileage.
Commercial reports and an independent inspection
Compare a provider’s coverage with the periods and countries missing from your documents. A commercial report may add evidence, but it does not replace an official check where one is needed or an inspection of the actual vehicle. Read provider reviews before choosing.
