Details to have ready
- VIN / chassis number
- Swiss Fahrzeugausweis
- Cantonal inspection and maintenance documents
Start with the cantonal authority
Switzerland’s official ch.ch guidance directs vehicle registration through the road traffic office. Confirm the required documents with the buyer’s canton and compare the Fahrzeugausweis to the vehicle. Do not treat a foreign VIN report as a Swiss registration approval.
Request inspection and service evidence
Ask the seller for the dated MFK or other inspection documents and workshop invoices. Compare identifying numbers and mileage across them. A recent inspection is evidence about that inspection, not a complete account of collision damage or maintenance.
Resolve import and document gaps
For a car brought into Switzerland, request its earlier registration and inspection records and the relevant import paperwork. Ask the cantonal office which additional evidence is required for registration. Commission an independent condition assessment when the history is incomplete.
Limits to keep in mind
- Cantonal procedures and access to records can differ.
- This guide does not promise a national public VIN accident or mileage database.
Commercial reports and an independent inspection
Compare a provider’s coverage with the periods and countries missing from your documents. A commercial report may add evidence, but it does not replace an official check where one is needed or an inspection of the actual vehicle. Read provider reviews before choosing.
