Details to have ready
- FIN / VIN
- Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I and Teil II
- HU inspection reports and service invoices
Compare both registration documents
Ask for the original Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I and Teil II and compare the FIN with the car. ADAC’s buyer guidance highlights forged documents and mismatched identification as warning signs. Resolve any discrepancy before agreeing to a purchase.
Read the HU and service sequence
Request the dated HU reports and repair invoices, and compare mileage across them. A current HU result addresses the inspection at that time; it does not establish that every earlier accident, repair or odometer change has been recorded.
Document the seller’s claims
Use a written contract that identifies the car and records the agreed mileage and disclosed damage. ADAC publishes a buyer checklist and model private-sale contract. For a car previously registered abroad, request that country’s original evidence as well.
Limits to keep in mind
- ADAC is a motoring organisation, not the German registration authority.
- No comprehensive anonymous German VIN accident or mileage database is promised here.
Commercial reports and an independent inspection
Compare a provider’s coverage with the periods and countries missing from your documents. A commercial report may add evidence, but it does not replace an official check where one is needed or an inspection of the actual vehicle. Read provider reviews before choosing.
