Details to have ready
- VIN for a modern vehicle
- Chassis number where required for an older vehicle
- State or territory registration details
Run the official PPSR vehicle search
The government PPSR service explains how to search a used vehicle using the appropriate serial identifier. Read its guidance carefully for older vehicles. Match the VIN to the physical car and keep the search certificate with the purchase records.
Read security and vehicle-status results separately
A PPSR vehicle search can identify registered security interests and may return NEVDIS stolen or written-off information where available. Read the actual certificate and its warnings. Missing or unavailable vehicle information is not the same as an affirmative clean result.
Add the state registration and condition checks
Use the relevant state or territory registration service and ask for service invoices. A registration check and a PPSR search serve different purposes. For an import, request earlier foreign records, and arrange an independent inspection for mechanical and structural condition.
Limits to keep in mind
- PPSR is not a complete maintenance, odometer or collision-history report.
- Available NEVDIS information depends on the vehicle and source data; read the certificate.
Commercial reports and an independent inspection
Compare a provider’s coverage with the periods and countries missing from your documents. A commercial report may add evidence, but it does not replace an official check where one is needed or an inspection of the actual vehicle. Read provider reviews before choosing.
