Check the identifier at the source
Use the number recorded on the physical vehicle, then compare it with the registration and invoices. Ask for the correct handbook if the stamping or label is difficult to locate. A screenshot supplied by a seller is useful context, but it should not replace checking the actual vehicle’s identifier.
Choose support by the car’s era
MG Motor UK separates support routes for newer vehicles, cars registered from 1991 to 2007 and pre-1991 classics. Begin with the original chassis or VIN and registration date. A modern decoding form may be unsuitable for an early MG with a historical identifier.
Request evidence suited to the vehicle
For a classic, collect restoration invoices and documentation supporting chassis and component identity. For a modern electric MG, prioritise battery, charging and service records. Neither a model match nor a recognisable badge establishes originality, current battery condition or the completeness of the vehicle’s history.
Limits to keep in mind
- VIN decoding identifies available specification data; accident, mileage, theft and ownership records require separate evidence and depend on the provider and country.
- NHTSA vPIC uses manufacturer submissions for the US regulatory system. International, low-volume and older vehicles may return incomplete results; an empty field is not proof that a vehicle is fraudulent.
- Historical chassis and frame numbers may not fit a modern 17-character VIN form. Preserve the identifier exactly as recorded on original documents.
From VIN details to a buying decision
Match the identifiers and documents, then investigate the countries where the vehicle was used. Read our cross-border guide or start with US records where relevant. Specifications do not establish current condition.
