Compare the identifiers before you buy
Copy the identifier from the vehicle itself and compare it character for character with the registration and seller’s paperwork. Use the owner’s manual for the precise location on that model; dashboard, body-label and chassis locations vary. Stop and resolve any mismatch before paying for a history search.
Use the chassis number for official manuals
IVECO explains that its Easy Guide app can retrieve a manual using the vehicle’s chassis number. Its UK support page directs owners of older vehicles to a dealer if the identifier is not recognised. Keep the complete original identifier available rather than changing it to obtain a result.
Ask for records of the finished vehicle
For a Daily, Eurocargo or another IVECO, request bodybuilder documents, weight information and records of subsequent conversions. Compare these with the chassis documentation and registration. A factory chassis decode cannot confirm the present body layout, operating condition or completion of all commercial inspections.
Limits to keep in mind
- VIN decoding identifies available specification data; accident, mileage, theft and ownership records require separate evidence and depend on the provider and country.
- NHTSA vPIC uses manufacturer submissions for the US regulatory system. International, low-volume and older vehicles may return incomplete results; an empty field is not proof that a vehicle is fraudulent.
- Historical chassis and frame numbers may not fit a modern 17-character VIN form. Preserve the identifier exactly as recorded on original documents.
From VIN details to a buying decision
Match the identifiers and documents, then investigate the countries where the vehicle was used. Read our cross-border guide or start with US records where relevant. Specifications do not establish current condition.
Compare report providers and use the viewing checklist.
