What the official PPSR search is for
A PPSR motor-vehicle search can show registered security interests. The search certificate may also include NEVDIS information, such as stolen or written-off status, where available. Enter the correct VIN or permitted chassis identifier and retain the certificate. The official service charges a fee; it is not a free full history report.
Check the information on the certificate
Compare identifiers with the actual vehicle and sale documents. Read any security-interest result and the limitations printed on the certificate. A result should not be treated as a guarantee of mechanical condition or as an exhaustive accident/maintenance history.
Registration and state or territory records
Use the relevant state or territory registration authority to check registration details and any available inspection information. Registration is separate from a PPSR search. If the car was imported, investigate its earlier country of use rather than assuming Australian records cover its entire life.
Compare commercial reports carefully
Check whether a commercial package includes the official PPSR search, other records and a certificate, and compare its total price with the service you need. Availability and record types differ. International products should not be described as a substitute for the relevant Australian register.
